I always wondered why the Liberian flag looked so similar to the United Stadian flag. In doing research for a political science paper, I found out that Liberia was founded by free slaves from the United States back in the 1800's.
That explains not just the flag, but the NAME of the country as well.
Unfortunately, it seems that the indigenous Africans and the African Americans always felt a little tension in the area. It's kinda sad. Some say that the civil war that took place from 1989 to 2003 was a direct cause of the tensions between the groups.
But of course, there are many other factors.
