I discovered that the prank my suitemates and I pulled on my other suitemate was not original. It was slightly devastating.
So now I have to redeem myself by making something else.
The pic is but a hint of the epicness that was our prank (which, by what i saw on the web, was executed in a WAAAAY better fashion than how I saw it on the web).
I just realized that Voltaire's "Candide" captures my state of mind during the year 2009 and 2008: completely confused and overly optimistic to the point where it would be too easy to pull divine pranks on my head.
(oooh fate...funny how I came to that conclusion shortly after pulling off what I believe to be one of the greatest pranks this world has ever seen on one of my suitemates.)

And yes, the whole cynicism leading nowhere is very true. It has been detrimental to my psychological well being for as long as I can remember.
I'd been theorizing about it a while ago, but then I forgot to think about it because I wasn't being so cynical about myself and my future. I have to say, I am feeling very good now.
So I went to the first big Calpirg event on campus two days ago to see how enthusiastic the people were about presenting the issues. I, unfortunately, was not able to speak to them, but my coordinator was acting nervous when she spoke. I saw new faces, apparently assigned to be coordinators for campaigns, giving nice speeches. Overall, it was good to listen to their argument as to why we should be joining them in their campaigns.
After Calpirg people spoke, The Associated Students (AS) president gave a very short speech. But DAMN it gave people a rush. People started cheering as he spoke and I'm sure the entire room would have erupted if he has just ONE more sentence to add to his speech.
And all he spoke about was how UCSD has shifted from styrofoam cups to biodegradable ones.
He said that this simple victory can be multiplied if we get our acts together and work toward the same goal. Yes, inspiration oozed even out of that generic line. I was really impressed. I was really inspired, actually. I was thinking of just dedicating myself to school this quarter, but his speech managed to convince me to stay active in my campaign involvement.
The man at the beginning of this video, Salvador Allende, was the only president in South America who managed to get a functioning socialist economy. He was very much loved by the people and was a very inspirational figure, just as Fidel Castro was to his own people. The United States actually sent a force to Chile and bombed the presidential palace in order to keep socialism in tact to contain the threat of communism. And with that, the people lost a very inspirational figure.
I vaguely remember reading that Chile became much worse off economically once he was killed. I can't help but think that a deteriorated spirit contributed to this tragic downfall.
I'll leave you with a very very morbid quote I've read about the internet and the weakness of the masses:
"You know what's funny? In Lenny Bruce's day, if you practiced free speech you were persecuted by society. Today, anything goes. However, in this day of the corporate mass media, your voice is swallowed up by the sheer volume of it all. You are not persecuted, you are ignored. That's a much more subtle and effective way to control people."
Heh, I'll give you an example of this. I subscribed to one blog a while ago and it flooded the little section that tells you about recent posts from ALL my subscriptions/friends/(w/e). Facebook does it similarly too; I stop caring about those people who take too many quizzes and post dumb statuses (by my own definition of dumb).
So yes, I don't even feel smart enough to try to compete for attention in this world of the internet. Too many better-read people out there.
